Azoth Ascension Trial

Systema Delenda Est

The Azoth Ascension Trial is the System’s advancement ordeal for the Azoth Rank, and its completion marks a decisive threshold for Raine Talis and Leese. Unlike the earlier Bismuth advancement, the trial does not transform their bodies or identities; it delivers an immense increase in essence and strength through a comparatively simple test of force and Domain control. Its importance lies in the contrast between the System’s intended challenge and the capabilities Cato has given his allies: what should be an exceptional trial becomes a confirmation that they have already outgrown the ordinary scale of System advancement.

Availability and Structure

The trial becomes available after Raine Talis, Leese, and Dyen have completed the preceding advancement requirements. The System announces that the destination is now accessible, and Raine immediately selects it through a teleportation pylon rather than delaying. The decision places the three travelers inside a higher-level advancement sequence whose destination is controlled through the System’s portal infrastructure.

The ordeal takes place in a dungeon constructed around the participant’s Domain. Raine’s version consists of passages and rooms separated by Alum-rank ice bars. The bars cannot be overcome by ordinary attacks or by simply forcing a way through; Raine must compress her entire Domain and her weapon Skill onto a single point in order to cut them. The task is mechanically straightforward, but its difficulty depends on whether the candidate has mastered the precision and concentration required to apply overwhelming power narrowly rather than broadly.

Raine Talis’s Completion

The System records the trial as complete when Raine Talis destroys the final Elite. She casts Clean over her weapon as the Elite’s corpse melts away, and the effect removes the remains from the weapon rather than from her body, since the fight has been so one-sided that she has not been dirtied. The completion notification begins her ascension immediately.

Raine experiences the advancement as an immense influx of essence and strength rather than as a profound alteration. The change is therefore quantitative but still overwhelming: she is not remade, yet the amount of power entering her dwarfs every previous increase. The trial’s design also clarifies the nature of her success. Her victory depends on using her Domain and weapon Skill with exact concentration, allowing her to cut through barriers that would be insurmountable to a less disciplined combatant.

Raine finishes first and waits alone in the trial’s vestibule. The result is not surprising to her, because the Azoth Trial favors brute force and she has been equipped and trained far beyond ordinary System expectations. She nevertheless recognizes that Leese’s and Dyen’s trials may not be identical, since the System can tailor the ordeal to each participant. Her confidence in them rests on a broader fact: anyone who has received Cato’s gifts should be able to withstand what the System presents as an advancement challenge.

Leese and Dyen

Leese arrives several hours after Raine, radiating the potent essence of Azoth and crossing the vestibule with her travel Skill as a flowing, mobile blizzard. Her excitement is conveyed through the link between the sisters as she reflects on the distance between their former Gold Rank and their present achievement. The rank that once seemed a difficult dream has become a shared reality.

Raine and Leese then reorganize their Skills together. They move their principal abilities upward into the new Azoth slots while leaving Silver slots available for additional utility Skills. Their offensive Skills and their cornerstone movement Skill therefore become Azoth-grade abilities, making the advancement more than a numerical change: it restructures the practical hierarchy of their combat capabilities. Their choice to fill the slots together also preserves a ritual of partnership amid the impersonal machinery of the System.

Dyen completes his own trial a full day later. On entering the vestibule, he immediately activates his stealth Skills, causing his Azoth essence to disappear into itself. Even with Cato’s perceptual enhancements, the sisters can barely detect him. They locate him only by pooling their senses through their shared link and allowing their combat brains to interpret minute clues. His arrival demonstrates that the trial does not produce a single uniform style of advancement: Raine’s success is overt and forceful, Leese’s is elemental and mobile, while Dyen’s remains defined by concealment and precision.

The Vestibule and Return

While waiting for Dyen, Raine and Leese test their new strength inside the trial vestibule. Their sparring devastates the open chamber, blasting and burning the grass, freezing the ground, and scoring the Alum-rank surroundings with deep cuts. Raine’s Volcanic Form, an S-rank upgrade of Molten Scales, enables her to absorb an almost full-power strike from Leese. The scale of their new capability is made explicit by the observation that cutting apart a mountain would now be easy once they left the trial space.

The two are careful not to direct their most potent attacks at the central pylon. The structure is their route out, and damaging it could leave them trapped in a pocket dungeon or an isolated chamber within the Core Worlds. Once Dyen appears, the three use the pylon to return to the outpost. The destination is another sign of the higher-level System: unlike the frontier’s open portal lists, the teleportation network is connected directly to the war-world faction system. They return only to the outpost, with no guarantee that they will retain control of it.

Consequences and Significance

The Azoth Ascension Trial gives Raine, Leese, and Dyen a new operational scale at a moment when their movement through the Core Worlds is becoming increasingly dangerous. The return may lead to immediate combat, a forced retreat to a city, or an overland escape, but the trio has prepared for each possibility. Their advancement is thus not an isolated reward; it is a logistical and military resource carried directly back into contested territory.

The trial also exposes the System’s uneasy relationship with agency. Its obstacles are real, but Cato’s biological frames, perceptual boosters, multiplier equipment, and advanced training have already changed the conditions under which the three can participate. The System still names the ordeal, controls its dungeon, sets its rank, and determines the reward, yet the participants enter it with capabilities produced outside the System’s intended technological limits. Their victory turns the trial into an inversion of the System’s hierarchy: the institution certifies advancement, but the decisive advantage comes from an alternative infrastructure built by Cato.

For Raine and Leese especially, the event joins escalation with continuity. They reach Azoth together, compare the achievement through their mental link, and preserve their shared practice of assigning Skills side by side. The System’s advancement mechanism tries to convert growth into a standardized sequence of ranks and rewards; their sisterhood makes the sequence collective rather than individual. The result is both a power milestone and a demonstration that the bonds surrounding Cato’s movement can survive, and even deepen, inside the machinery designed to regulate them.
